Tribute to the Valentine spirit
Most of the winter chill has gone and the ants begin to busy themselves again. The animals begin to stir from their long sleep to the soft light of February. The sun grows brighter as it rises high into the sky; but not yet too bright and not too dim, just enough to bring soft sunlight to the grounds yet soft and gentle, not bringing any glare with it. A fortnight it has been since the start of February and some time it has been since the most chilling air of frost has passed by. The grounds still look as bare as a cemetary, with only the evergreens showing their splendid green coats. The beach trees are yet to show any sign of renewal since the yellowing of their leave during fall and the daffodils, which covered the ground in a splendid yellow-spotted carpet, have yet to show any sign of saplings. Coincidentally, a small but swift sparrow sweeps across the grounds. "Finally!" it says to itself as it spreads its wings to sweep across the garden grounds, pass the fence where the evergreen shrubs grow abundantly, ahead towards the still daffadilless field, and then across to the great beach tree that has been there many, many years before the sparrow ever scented the earth. The tree still bare as if it were dead with no leaves to cover its branches, it stood there exposed and naked. As if a king whitout his crown, the beach tree stood there a tree without its leaves. The sparrow hopped from branch to branch, making scratches along its way. After all, its excitement was not unexpected- it had not seen the tree bloom for days and days when winter still brought its chill. But today, as the sparrow hopped from branch to branch, it saw a joyful sight. On the highest branch of the three, there it grew! It was small as a snail's egg but lush green like the bushes of the evergreen shrubs. It was protruding from a small hole on the branch. It was a bud, the first bud of Spring! Then the bird sang...
"Spring has come! Spring has come!
The beach has showed its first bud
On the top branch it is, the top branch
Oh what a beautiful day
For spring has come
Spring! Spring! Spring!"
Not far away, a couple stood huddled together. As they watched the bird dance on the beach tree, somehow they understood its song. What a days this was! Spring had come, and with it Valentine's Day. Let us renew our love for our loved ones on this special day, as mother nature renews the trees, marking a renewal of its love.
