A Black Sheep?
Have you ever heard of the song called "Bah Bah Black Sheep"?
Just recently, i wondered why it is "black" sheep and not "white" sheep? In all my life, while i watch tv or look at documentaries, i've never seen a black sheep before. I've only seen white ones. It sounds like another conspiracy theory to me. And it lead me to this: timeline changes.
Let's focus on music first. What were the first themes in music when pop culture came about? What were the first themes in music before alternative music came along? I'm seeing Freud's theory of transference all over again. It is sort of freakish to know that, however i might oppose his theory of psychosexual development, the latter parts of his theory still serve much truth in empirical value. Mainstream music and alternative music are two differently themed streams of music. To sum it all up, one is more proactive, the other one is more pro-anarchy.
My previous post was about musical healing. I had basically explained that music leads to emotional connection, which can cause either lighter moods or distress. As i wondered how the culture of music turned from the mainstream music to alternative music, it dawned on me that alternative music is all about thoughts that adolescents or individuals are trying to vent out. These items are like their dissapointments and other dissatisfactions in their daily lives. If you're a child still under the wing of your parents, do you find that there are only a few people or maybe nobody in the world that you can go to when you have problems or something on your mind? You just bottle it all up and hold it inside you, until either you find someone or until you blow up, in which case you'll just spread even more distress to others. Basically, what i'm trying to point out is that these emotions have been suppressed inside us. The fact that we hide them means that we are not dealing with them at the moment and we are holding it until we find a way to deal with it. However, that way may not be the best way to vent your emotions.
In music, perhaps it has turned to a time when people use it to vent out those dissapointments. If you were to notice, alternative music has most of its fan base in the adolescent age groups. So, does it make sense that the adolescents are now controlling the flow of the music industry, and once this age group gets bored with this type of music or just gets other ways of venting their emotions, the music industry will just turn to another type of music. I can't imagine what that would be.
However, this phenomenon poses another question. If adolescents are so dissapointed in happenings of their daily lives, what caused it? Most adolescents are not very happily about their parents. There's always a spat here or there that will bring them a slum face when it comes to parents. Are parents to blame for the suppression of children's emotions? Has parenting styles become such a contributor to the levels of happiness of a child? If such is true, then i am wondering how we could deal with parents. The world is not perfect, and that's a fact, but if the cognitive stages of Piaget serve to be true, then adolescents are not yet capacitated to have the openness and relative concept of knowledge to understand the actions of parents, that sometimes just seem to be very unfair and without reasoning at all.
In the past, classical music ruled over the other genres and this is because almost all listeners to classical music were the aristocrats that had very high social status and much more aged as well. Then perhaps, classical music depicts a mind of conserved and contemplating persons to which their composure is well kept to be calm and steady in rhythm. This is consistant with the lifestyles of people as they age. If that's the case, then it's the adolescent stage that is filled with these emotions that are suppressed and not properly dealt with. If adolescents are not able to guide themselves, then parents play a big role in this. Then, i think parents may be taking a wrong approach to understand the child, perhaps they are using ways that are too centered towards themselves without realizing that times have changed and things ARE just different.
Whatever it may be, i'm living it. As long as i'm alive, i won't give up - on me or all of you out there.
