To follow the blind, or be blind...
As a child, i went to the United Kingdom to study for several years when my farther had attained a scholarship to do his masters there. Yes, I've been to the UK before but no big deal about that. However, the biggest change that happened to me there was the way that I began to think. In the UK education system, there is a large freedom to voice out your opinions and sometimes even criticise actions in school. In Asia, this would be a breech of respect towards the teachers. However, it is totally another case in the UK. They believe in developing a child's ability to think from a very young age. They want us to think independently and not become like robots who just follow what our superiors would say, word for word. Do you think you could get anywhere in life playing the role of an underdog?
I believe that it is important to learn how to criticise and think independently from a young age. We all know that it is always easier to shape a person when he/she is still at a young age because children adapt at an extremely rapid rate. It is sometimes unbelieveable what can happen to a child when he/she is put under different circumstances.
In the local education system, students are all spoon fed everything. Focus is given towards developing a single mindset among students and this brings the lacking of individual variety. Everyone seems to have the same grades, the same lifestyle, the same study methods, the same everything! This would not be as propostorous if it weren't for the fact that thier only goal in life is to get an A for their subjects. I know that many people have the ability to do so, but the problem is that his whole childhood has been focused only on studying. He has had little or no time at all to develope social or thinking skills. Sadly, this is the case in many asian communities. We excel in our studies but when it comes to our working life, we are much less qualitative compared to the western countries.
People here think that as a person matures, he learns how to think independently. Is that true? He might mature and become more responsible but if he has been kept under the well for such a long time, he is certainly going to take some time to adapt to his surroundings. The reason that many parents want to send their children overseas to study is to gain exposure. This exposure is needed for their children to develope character and thier views over issues in their daily lives. Some people get such a culture shock that they can't adapt at all. All they want to do is study, study, study and nothing else. They love studying and thanks to the system they have been brought up in, studying is all they know how to do. They know alot of stuff, but the problem is they have no idea how to use it because they have never used it!
Perhaps this isn't all the fault of the educators. Maybe it's the parents fault? Maybe it's the individuals own fault? I think that it is prime time to stop trying to put the blame on anyone and actually start doing something about this matter. In my opinion, this is the major cause of unemployed graduates.
